• Christ and Church Life and Building Spirit and Bride

As a lover of Christ and a pursuer of truth, I write down my joys, memories and reflections.

May God lead us all into the secret of His presence, and build us into the oneness of His body in love.

The Lord overcame the temptation of Satan

Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He became hungry.
And the tempter came and said to Him, If You are the Son of God, speak that these stones may become loaves of bread. But He answered and said, It is written, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out through the mouth of God.”
Then the devil took Him into the holy city and set Him on the wing of the temple, And said to Him, If You are the Son of God, cast Yourself down; for it is written, “To His angels He shall give charge concerning You, and on their hands they shall bear You up, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.” Jesus said to him, Again, it is written, “You shall not test the Lord your God.”
Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, All these will I give You if You will fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him, Go away, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.”
Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

We all quite familiarize how the Lord was tempted by Satan and He overcame all of them. I would like to spend some time to comment on these verses:

  1. The very fact that the Lord was ever tempted is very encouraging. We know that the Lord was tempted just like us; in fact, he was tempted with the most and the best of what the world can offer. And our Lord overcame with grace, elegance and glory.
  2. The Lord stood firmly as the Son of Man, not as the Son of God. It is precious to see that He fully depends on the Father and demonstrate how to overcome Satan by the Father. Satan not only tempted the Lord, but  the fundamental temptation was to tempt the Lord to switch His stand from the Son of Man to the Son of God. The Lord stood firm as the Son of Man and defeated Satan as such.
  3. The Lord defeated every temptation of Satan by the Scripture and the words of God. tempation We need to see that God’s words are established firm for eternity. We need to be constituted with the words as the solid foundation to fight against Satan.
  4. The Lord was tempted by the greatest temptation we can ever be tempted. First of all, He was tempted with hunger. The hunger and the lack of food stands for the necessities of life, such as food, shelter, and clothing, It is one of the greatest temptation since we often prioritize our living and necessity of life prior the kingdom of God. The Lord said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out through the mouth of God.” It is really a vision to understand that we live because of God’s grace and His supply. Without God and His grace, we cannot live at all.  We need to see that if we seek God’s kingdom and righteousness, God would provide and bless us abundantly.
  5. The second temptation was death. This is also one of the greatest test and temptation for we often loose sight of God when our lives are threatened, or death approaches. This is the time to fully trust the Lord and to see His resurrection life can overcome death. He has died on the cross and overcame death in His resurrection. Relying on the Lord is our only way to overcome death. In fact, one of the signs of one’s maturity is not fearing death and recognize the fact that we all going to die physically one day, our spirit will live, and we will resurrect at the Lord’s return. How glorious when a Christian dies, he has no fear but full of faith, grace, joy, and full knowledge of God’s plan for the coming time.
  6. The third temptation was the glory of the world and all the riches of the nations. This can be one of the greatest temptation we can ever face. I don’t any fleshly human beings can do it. Praise the Lord that He gained the victory. In His defeating words, He proclaimed “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” This is also His charging and commanding words for us believers to take heed. We need to focus our eyes on the Lord our God, to serve Him with a pure  and clean heart.
  7. Lastly, we see that Lord was tempted before He started His ministry. It indicates that a minister or worker for the Lord needs to be fully dealt with before His service and work. The Lord cannot use a workman with an impure motive or a tempted heart. It is not the same as simply being a believer, to serve for God’s ministry, one needs to be fully dealt with before doing a proper work. Only when we overcame all the temptations in life, we may serve and be fully and completely useful to Him.
  8. At the end, I praise the Lord that He overcame all the temptation that any of us can ever face. Today this mighty and victorious One is with us and in us to energize, vitalize, supply, strengthen, encourage, help us in our daily walk at each step. We need to continue seeking His as the protection from the evil one, guiding light in our daily walk, all-sufficient provision, and overcoming life in us.

Oh! my dearest Lord. I praise You that You has overcame Satan, His temptations, death, and all the negative things that would distact us from God. I praise You that You has defeated the evil one as the Son of man, and rebuked him with the words of God. I worship You as the overcoming and victorious One.

Lord! Please protect me from the evil One. Help me in my temptations. Again and again,  he tempted me with the necessities of life, anxieties in life, physical death, and the riches and beauty of the world. How I need You, Lord. Even protect me from my flesh and nature man. Open my eyes to see that I am lacking and incapable to anything without You. DO not let me to fall into Satan’s trap and schemes. Continue to purify and cleanse my heart. I want declare, some time in the future, that ” Lord, I am fully for You, for Your plan, purpose, pleasure and economy. My meaning and purpose of life is to know You, serve You, and live You.” Amen!
