• Christ and Church Life and Building Spirit and Bride

    As a lover of Christ and a pursuer of truth, I write down my joys, memories and reflections.

    May God lead us all into the secret of His presence, and build us into the oneness of His body in love.

Human Virtues 6- Compassion and Mercy

And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the great and first commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Jesus answered, The first is: “Hear, Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord; And you shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart and from your whole soul and from your whole mind and from your whole strength.” The second is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said to Him, Well said, Teacher; in truth You have said that He is one and there is not another besides Him; And to love Him from the whole heart and from the whole understanding and from the whole strength and to love one’s neighbor as himself is much more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.

If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example so that you also may do even as I have done to you.

Or he who exhorts, in that exhortation; he who gives, in simplicity; he who leads, in diligence; he who shows mercy, in cheerfulness.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves the other has fulfilled the law. For, “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, ” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does not work evil to his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

For you were called for freedom, brothers; only do not turn this freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ also forgave you.

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, inward parts of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, long-suffering;

1 Thessalonians
Furthermore we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who labor among you and take the lead among you in the Lord and admonish you, And to regard them most highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we exhort you, brothers, Admonish the disorderly, console the fainthearted, sustain the weak, be long-suffering toward all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always pursue what is good both for one another and for all.

10:24 且当彼此相顾, 激发爱心, 勉励行善;
And let us consider one another so as to incite one another to love and good works,

If a brother or sister is without clothing and lacks daily food, And any one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, yet you do not give them the necessities of the body, what is the profit?
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, forbearing, compliant, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, without hypocrisy.

And finally be all of the same mind, sympathetic, loving the brothers, tenderhearted, humble-minded; Not rendering evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing one another, because you were called to this, that you might inherit blessing.

The essence of love, compassion, and mercy is summarized in “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  On the one hand, one cannot genuinely love another before genuinely loving God. Everyone in the flesh is, more or less, self-centered, self-interested, selfish, worried, anxious, and not peaceful. Only in loving God, we may stop focusing on ourselves, and start to lift our eyes to recognized and hopefully love others. On the other hand, God did not ask us to love others more than loving ourselves, but love others as ourselves. It is a profound truth that God actually does command us to love ourselves. The fact is we cannot genuinely love others before genuinely loving ourselves. However, one point I need to address is that this love is never the fleshly or natural love. (I will compare the divine and natural love in another post.) To conclude, the core of compassion is empathy, which is to identify one’s feeling as our own. In the end, we need to learn to Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
