Revisiting the divinity and humanity of Christ

Scripture Reading:

创世记-Genesis 1:26-27 神说,我们要按着我们的形像,照着我们的样式造人,使他们管理海里的鱼、空中的鸟、地上的牲畜、和全地、并地上所爬的一切爬物。神就按着自己的形像创造人,乃是按着神的形像创造他;创造他们有男有女。

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in leading many sons into glory, to make the Author of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of One, for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brothers, Saying, “I will declare Your name to My brothers; in the midst of the church I will sing hymns of praise to You.”

 

Christ is one of the divine Trinity. He is eternal. He is embodiment of God the Father. He is the complete God and the perfect man. The person of Christ is most central and essential not only to the whole Christian faith and doctrine, but also to our subjective experience and enjoyments. Deviation from the Christology revealed in the Scripture would constitute heresy.
I would like to focus on the process Christ went through and how the divinity and humanity are mingled during such process. Before getting into the details, let me list out a couple of many facts and truth concerning Christ:

  1. Christ is God. (Roman 9:5, Heb 1:8)
  2. Christ is Man, the Son of Man. (Too many!)
  3. Christ is God’s only begotten Son. (John 1:18, 3:16)
  4. Adam was created according to the image of Christ, (Genesis 1:26)
  5. God became the flesh through Christ (John 1:14)
  6. Christ is the firstborn of all creation. (Colossian 1:15)
  7. Christ is the firstborn of the dead. (Colossian 1:18)

In the eternity past, Christ is the Son of God and the only begotten Son of God in His divinity. As far as His divinity and Godhead is concerned, He will always remain the only begotten Son of God unto eternity future. But as far as His humanity is concerned, He has not gone through the process to wear the humanity yet. Speaking of His power, He is the Creator, through whom God made the universe. Speaking of His nature, Christ was the embodiment of God yet without humanity.

Two thousand years ago, God became a Man, called Jesus. He was born as a baby, having flesh and blood., and lived on the earth for 33 years. Economically speaking, God the Father is still in the heavens, but essentially speaking, the mighty Triune God, God the Father, the Son, and the Spirit are all in Christ Jesus, being constraint by time and space, having no outward beauty. In His incarnation, Christ brought divinity into humanity, the initiation of the mingling between divinity and humanity. However, His has not gained the glory as the Son of Man, and His humanity has not been “sonizedattainm” as the Son of God. In other words, Christ has not become the Son of God as a Man.

On the cross, Christ’s all-inclusive death and His precious blood redeemed us from our sins and offenses. In three days, Christ was resurrected. His resurrection marked God acceptance of Him as the offering, propitiation, and ransom of our sins. More importantly, the resurrection indicates the constitution of Christ as the Son of God in His humanity, the attainment of glory, the establishment of Christ as God’s anointing One, and the birth of Christ from the dead. In His resurrection, He became the firstborn of God, leading many His brothers who share His life to praise the Father.

Under this understanding, Adam was created according to the image of Christ, but not in His humanity, but in His divinity. In addition, although Colossians 1:15 stated that Christ is the first born of all creation, the word “creation” speaks of His humanity as part of the creation, and the word “firstborn” speaks of His superiority and His supremacy before all creation. But as far as time is concerned, this verse doesn’t necessarily assert that Christ’s humanity is before Adam.

Finally, in the ascension of Christ, He brought humanity to divinity. The Triune God indeed went through a process in Christ, so the going of Christ with His humanity would lead to the coming of the life-giving and compound Spirit with all the riches into God’s believers.
