• Christ and Church Life and Building Spirit and Bride

As a lover of Christ and a pursuer of truth, I write down my joys, memories and reflections.

May God lead us all into the secret of His presence, and build us into the oneness of His body in love.

The characters of a Pharisee

But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you close off the kingdom of the heavens in the face of men; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to enter.

But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour the widows’ houses, even while for a pretense you make long prayers. For this reason you shall receive greater judgment.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you go about the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.

Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound. Fools and blind men, which is greater, the gold or the temple which sanctifies the gold? And, Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift which is upon it, he is bound. Blind men, which is greater, the gift or the altar which sanctifies the gift? Therefore he who swears by the altar swears by it and by all the things upon it; And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by Him who dwells in it; And he who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you give a tenth of the mint and the anise and the cummincummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law — justice and mercy and faithfulness. But these you should have done and not neglected the others. Blind guides, who strain out the gnat but swallow the camel!

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but inwardly they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and the dish so that their outside also may become clean.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you resemble whitewashed graves, which outwardly appear beautiful but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build up the graves of the prophets and adorn the tombs of the righteous, And say, If we had been there in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. So then you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. And you, fill up the measure of your fathers! Serpents! Brood of vipers! How shall you escape the judgment of Gehenna? Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, So that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah, Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Truly I say to you, All these things shall come upon this generation. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I desired to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

The greatest condemnation in the Bible and the most fierce and lengthy rebuke by the Lord probably belong to the Pharisees. First of all, the term Pharisee itself has no negative meaning, but refers to those who know and follow Moses’ commandments and laws. So what is really wrong with the Pharisees in their persons or in their deeds that make them deserve such condemnations?

Here are some outward character of a Pharisee.

  • The Pharisees are hypocrites.
  • The Pharisees act outwardly as lawful and righteous but inwardly they are full of lawlessness.
  • The Pharisees lead people away from God.
  • The Pharisees are greedy lovers of money, obtaining money through unlawful means.
  • The Pharisees desire others’ respects and praises.
  • The Pharisees stumble other people.

Here are some of my interpreted character of a Pharisee.

  • The Pharisees do not speak or act according to or what are on their hearts. Their mouths and actions are not consistent with their hearts and minds.
  • The Pharisees are those who establish their own rules and laws, and require and expect others to follow. They put their own rules above everything, including God. They love to teach, and lead, and most importantly, they love feel superior over others in whatever way possible.
  • The Pharisees are self-centered, not knowing God. They never confess, reflect, or blame themselves for any fault. They pray to themselves. They do all the nice and good things for their own satisfaction, and they believe into a self-stage images for themselves.
  • The Pharisees are blind spiritually, having no knowledge or discernments on spiritual matters, full of fleshy deeds and natural temperaments. They may know the Scripture in a literal way, but never in a genuine and spiritual way.
  • The Pharisees prosecute God’s people and stop the carrying out of God’s operations. They do things and order others according to their own desire and preference, while declaring and proclaiming their doings in the name of the Lord. On that Day, the Lord will say, “I do not know you.”
  • The Pharisees put religious and lawful requirements on people, for which they don’t even obey or follow They know nothing about the reality and truth. They either prevent or stop others’ salvation, or stumble and lead away those who are saved.
  • The Pharisee always see, observe, seek their people’s fault or defects and judge them, but they always fail to see their own problems. Ironically, usually the problems their care the most or feel irritated about are often found in themselves.
  • The Pharisees cannot love, don’t know love or feel love, and refuse to love. They stumble people all the time, but never confess and repent for their stumbling. Their love, if any, are natural, full of preferences, opinions, and conditions.
  • The Pharisees have great desire for money, power, and authority. They would prosecute those may take over their authority. They hate those who do not obey or respect them.

Like I mentioned above, the Lord gave His greatest condemnation to Pharisees. And I suspect that the Pharisees constitute the greatest evil, at least according to the principle in the Bible. Here is why? The Pharisees do not know, fear, or feel God, having no knowledge of God’s way, economy, and work. They are self-centered, and act according to their desires and preferences. They love money, power, authority, and the sense of superiority. These things all sound bad, but the worst is that they do everything in God’s name. In fact, their mouths never leave God’s name, but they do all things, especially on others, against God’s plan, will, and operations. They proclaim to save people, but they lead people to the lake of fire. They proclaim to release people, but they add more religious and lawful requirements on people. They proclaim to obey and follow God, but they lead people away from God’s will and heart. To sum, the Pharisees constitute the greatest evil because they do all the evil things in God’s name.
