The Person and Actions of the Spirit

The Person, emotion, and mind of the Spirit

  • Grieves
    • Isaiah 63:10, “But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore, He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.”
    • Eph. 4:30, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
  • Loves
    • Rom. 15:30, “Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me.”
  • Has a mind
    • Rom. 8:27, “But He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to God.”
  • Speaks
    • 2 Sam. 23:1, “The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.”
    • Acts 8:29, “And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.”
    • Acts 10:19, “And while Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.”

    • Acts 5:9, “Then Peter said to her, ‘Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test?'”

    • Acts 20:28, “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”
  • Can be a witness
    • Acts 5:32, “And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
  • Can be resisted
    • Acts 7:51, “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit.”

The actions  of the Spirit

  • Gives life
    • John 6:63, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”
    • Rom. 8:11 And if the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.
    • 1 Cor. 15:45 “So also it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living soul”; the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit.”
  • Abides
    • John 14:17 “Even the Spirit of reality, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him; but you know Him, because He abides with you and shall be in you.”
  • Teaches
    • John 14:26, “These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
    • Luke 12:12, “for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
  • Testifies
    • John 15:26 “But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of reality, who proceeds from the Father, He will testify concerning Me;”
  • Guides
    • John 16:13 “But when He, the Spirit of reality, comes, He will guide you into all the reality; for He will not speak from Himself, but what He hears He will speak; and He will declare to you the things that are coming.”
  • Intercedes
    • Rom. 8:26, “Moreover, in like manner the Spirit also joins in to help us in our weakness, for we do not know for what we should pray as is fitting, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
  • Leads
    • Matt. 4:1, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
    • Rom. 8:14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
  • Filled by
    • Acts 2:4, “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.”
