• Christ and Church Life and Building Spirit and Bride

As a lover of Christ and a pursuer of truth, I write down my joys, memories and reflections.

May God lead us all into the secret of His presence, and build us into the oneness of His body in love.

Divine attributes and human virtues in the Bible

Divine attributes denote things of God. When being experienced by us, these things of God become our virtues. God has attributes and we have virtues. For example, love is an attribute of God, not His virtue, but when we experience God’s love, it becomes the virtue of love. Hence, we use the word “attribute” concerning God, but “virtue” concerning us.

We often talk about becoming and expressing God in life and nature but not in the Godhead, but we often ignore the details about what we shall be or do when God is expressed on us. God is not expressed through outward things, such as miraculous gifts, powerful speaking, or devoted services, but through something issued through our innermost being unto our ordinary deeds, daily living, and common interactions with others around us. We may never utter clearly about how God’s attributes are expressed through human virtues, but when we  are around godly people, we may know that God is expressed.

Another important note is that these virtues are not legal requirements or moral standards but rather practical and detailed descriptions of the spontaneous living out of the divine inner life. Our goal is not to imitate or try to live out these virtues by our own attempts or natural strength, but to have the divine elements of Christ being wrought into us by our daily contacting of Him and by His daily dispensing into our being so that these virtues may be lived out and told out through us. Indeed, great is the mystery of godliness!

The above is my attempt to compile a list of virtues recorded in the Bible. Here are some disclaimers:

  1. It is not a complete list. However, I do believe all the essential virtues are included. (Future appendage is expected.)
  2. The effort to compile the scripture reference of these virtues is by far not complete. Some virtues, such as love or faith, may have hundreds of references so I didn’t even bother to list them. And for some virtues, I have made prior efforts to compile their reference whose links are provided. Most likely, the reference in those documents are more comprehensive.
  3. I only list virtues that are explicit in the Scripture. No implicit or indirect virtues are listed. For example, the virtue “honesty” is implied in several instances, but the word is never mentioned so it is not listed. Moreover, I didn’t include the attributes that were condemned or blamed by Bible, unless their absence is explicitly stated to be desired.

In compiling this list, I learned a few new virtues that I didn’t pay attention to before, such as orderliness, and I also noticed that I overlooked or underestimate the importance of a few virtues, such sobermindedness, and gravity. Their repeated appearances in the Scripture indicate their importance.
