• Christ and Church Life and Building Spirit and Bride

As a lover of Christ and a pursuer of truth, I write down my joys, memories and reflections.

May God lead us all into the secret of His presence, and build us into the oneness of His body in love.

The pre-existence of Christ (3/4) – The name Jesus (Joshua)

Numbers 13:16
These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

Acts 7:45
This tabernacle our fathers, having in their turn received, also brought in with Joshua when they took possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David,

The name of Jesus was known from the beginning and honored by the inspired prophets. The word “Jesus” in Greek is equivalent to “Joshua” in Hebrew, meaning “Jehovah the Salvation” or “Jehovah the Savior.”

Moses knew that in Christ was something divine, and, under the influence of the Spirit, he also foresaw the name Jesus, so he dignified it with a distinguished privilege. The name of Jesus, which had never been uttered among men before the time of Moses, and which is far above all names, was applied unprecedentedly and exclusively to the son of Nun, who he knew would receive, as a type and symbol, the supreme command after his own death.

Therefore, His successor, though was not born with the name Jesus but had been named “Auses” or “Hoshea” by his parents, was bestowed by Moses the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, as a gift of honor and as a mark of the highest honor, far above all names, rules, powers, kings and lords, because Joshua (Jesus) himself bore a resemblance to our Saviour in the fact that he alone, after Moses and after the completion of the symbolical worship which had been transmitted by him, succeeded to the government of the true and pure faith.

Symbolically speaking, Joshua typifies not only Christ but also the grace being the substitution of the law. When Moses, who enacted the law and the old covenant, died, Joshua came in, brought the Children of Israel into the good land, typifying that the Lord Jesus brings the people of God into rest and the enjoyment of the all-inclusive Christ.
