• Christ and Church Life and Building Spirit and Bride

As a lover of Christ and a pursuer of truth, I write down my joys, memories and reflections.

May God lead us all into the secret of His presence, and build us into the oneness of His body in love.

The Conditions of Christ’s indwelling

Though this truth of Christ’s indwelling in the believers is not commonly known, it is clearly revealed in the Scripture. (Colossians 1:27)

Colossians 1:27
To whom God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory,

However, while God love all and His redemption applies to everyone who believes, Christ’s indwelling seems to be conditional. Apostle Paul asked the believers in Corinth to test and prove themselves.

2 Corinthians 13:5
Test yourselves whether you are in the faith; prove yourselves. Or do you not realize about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you are disapproved?

If Apostle asked them whether they are in the faith and whether Jesus Christ is in them, does it mean it is possible for Christ to not live in a believer?

Let’s review this critical portion of the Scripture when Jesus revealed His coming as the Spirit in John 14.

1 John 14:15-17
If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may be with you forever, Even the Spirit of reality, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him; but you know Him, because He abides with you and shall be in you.

This precious verse reveals several important truth:

  1. If a believer love the Lord, he or she will keep His commandments.
  2. If a believer loves the Lord, He will ask the Father to give he or she another Comforter (the Spirit)
  3. The Comforter ‘may’ be with he or she forever.
  4. The believers know the Comforter because He abides in them.

1. Love the Lord

Here we see that the Lord’s indwelling is at least depends on believer’s love to the Lord.

John 14:23-26 also reinforces the same points: If anyone loves the Lord, God the Father will come to him and make an abode with him.

John 14:23
Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make an abode with him.

Apostle John warned us again in His epistles that if anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. No love, no indwelling.

1 John 2:15
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him;

Apostle John’s epistles further expounds on additional conditions for Christ’s indwelling.

2. Does not sin: Everyone who sins doesn’t abide in Him, and has not seen Him or known Him.

1 John 3:6
Everyone who abides in Him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen Him or known Him.

3. Love the brothers

1 John 3:14-15
We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers. He who does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

1 John 3:17
But whoever has the livelihood of the world and sees that his brother has need and shuts up his affections from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

1 John 4:12
No one has beheld God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.

4. Keep His commandments

1 John 3:24
And he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And in this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He gave to us.

5. Confess that Jesus is the Son of God

1 John 4:15
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him and he in God.
